How to Bring Health Applications to the Smart Consumer? Health Application Evaluator as the Quality Label for Apps

The market for health applications is growing strongly, and a separate application can be found for almost every health concern. But how to be sure that the chosen health application really works for health, is safe and complies with technological standards?
In several countries, registries have been set up for health applications, to which the application must go through a thorough, multifaceted evaluation process. Now it has a register of its health applications in Estonia as well. The “Health Application Evaluator” created by TalTech, brings together the health applications on the Estonian market and describes their compliance with modern market expectations.

Maarja-Liis Elland is an e-health analyst at TalTech E-Medicine Center. She has a master’s degree in health technology and, since 2014, has been active in several digital health projects and companies (Cognuse, LabToWellness, North-Estonian Regional Hospital, TalTech). At TalTech, she has been involved in the Health Sense project, the competition for remote service demonstration projects, and the development of the Health Application Evaluator. From this autumn, she will dedicate herself to the implementation of the Health Application Evaluator project.
